Eclipse Update Problem with problematic adt.debug dependency

Recently I encountered a problem that prevented me from adding features to my Eclipse 3.2.1 install using the built in update mechanism. I first saw the problem when trying to pull down the Ruby RDT; I kinda thought it might have been the fault of that update site’s config and ignored the problem by downloading the plugins and installing manually. Then I got the same problem trying to get hold of Scala’s SDT eclipse plugin… hmmm, so perhaps the RDT wasn’t at fault.

Eclipse Update oAW problem

The specific error is that %pluginName (4.1.2.v20070314) requires plug-in "org.atl.eclipse.adt.debug"… interesting given that I already have that plugin installed and available. Thinking back, I’d only installed it earlier this month in support of some investigation I was doing into open architecture ware (oAW).

I’ve not yet got to the bottom of the problem but removing the oAW plugins made the problem go away and allowed me to use the update manager again. At some point I may go back and have a closer look, but for now I’m back up and running. Shame Eclipse didn’t tell me it was having a problem with my current install rather than a problem with the remote update site. :-(
